As humans, we often look down on those not as fortunate as us. People living in poverty or with addiction. The adage, “walk a mile in their shoes,” challenges us not to judge others but to try and see things from their perspective. We need to see the world through their eyes.
Jesus came to earth to walk in our shoes. He came to live life among us so He could relate to our daily struggles. In Matthew, we read that He not only saw the temptations of men, but Satan himself came to earth to tempt Him directly. Satan tempted him to provide for himself when hungry, accumulate the earthly wealth and glory, to show Himself as God before His timing. But, Jesus told Satan to get behind him, to leave Him alone. He did not let Himself fall into the trap of sin Satan set before Him. Jesus walked in our shoes to prove His love for us.
When we show compassion to those less fortunate than ourselves, we show them the love we have been given. We let them see Christ in us. When you see someone with dirty clothes, begging on the street, driving a ragged car, instead of walking around them on the other side of the street, ask them if you can help. Gather a group of people from church and start a mission project to help the homeless by providing daily necessities. Support an inner-city ministry where many of these people live. Donate to charities that assist the different populations in need, homeless, addicted, abused. Let others see the love of Jesus Shine.
